Sequans Technology Selected for Major WiMAX Deployment in India Print E-mail

 French-based WiMAX chipmaker Sequans announced this week that they've been picked to supply WiMAX chips to PointRed Telecom, the product design subsidiary of India's Gemini Communications. PointRed recently was awarded 40% of the contract from state-owned operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)for an Indian WiMAX network deployment. WiMAX equipment providers Alvarion and ZTE are also involved. 

Once deployed, BSNL's multi-state network promises to be the largest in the world with 7,000 base stations delivering commercial broadband and e-governance services across several Indian states.

Far EasTone launches WiMAX in Taiwan Print E-mail

Taiwanese operator Far EasTone (FET) this week launched its commercial WiMAX service in Taichung city, delivering entertainment focused content such as music and movies as well as wireless internet access.

Clearwire plans to boot up WiMAX in Spain Print E-mail

Clearwire Corp. is expanding its high-speed wireless Internet service to Europe, announcing that it will begin selling the so-called 4G service in Malaga, Spain.

WiMAX licensees reminded to deploy services soon or face penalties

The Malaysian National News Agency, Bernama, reports that the four WiMAX licensed companies are facing the possibility of a fine and having their licenses revoked if their services do not commence in a year's time. The comments came from Malaysia's Minister of Energy, Water and Communications Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik. The ministry has previously informed the companies of desires to see commercial services in place by March 2008.

Motorola Wins Big in Pakistan Print E-mail

Motorola wins a major contract with Wateen Telecom-Pakistan to supply 198,000 WiMAX CPE units.

Motorola's win with Wateen Telecom is actually an expansion of an existing relationship as Motorola had already been selected to supply Wateen with an 802.16e WiMAX solution.

This expansion of the contract puts a number on the quanity of initial customer premise equipment radios that Wateen intends to field. Despite the fits and starts we sometimes see with WiMAX in the US, the International market for the technology appears very strong.
