Airspan Networks Inc. announced that
its MicroMAX products in the 5 GHz frequency band have been
successfully deployed in the Ukraine.
Ten national and regional carriers recently won frequency licenses
in the 5 GHz band and are now beginning to deploy WiMAX networks.
Airspan is currently supplying five of these carriers with its WiMAX
solutions and they are offering commercial services in Odessa, Lviv,
Zaporojie, and Donetsk. WiMAX networks in 5 GHz are also planned in
other large Ukrainian cities. Ukraine network integrator Unidata is
managing the relationships with these operators.
MicroMAX is a family of integrated micro-cell base stations
with all-in-one outdoor packaging of RF and baseband components.
Currently, there are no WiMAX Forum Certified products available using
the 5 GHz frequency band, though a certification profile for 5.8 GHz
exists.
PAN Wireless, a joint venture between UK-based Networks
By Wireless and Ukrainian satellite and telecoms equipment provider PAN
Telecom, was issued a ten-year WiMAX wireless broadband network operating license
in October 2007 for the use of frequencies in the 5.73-5.76 GHz band in
27 regions of Ukraine. The spectrum can be used from April 2008
onwards, and services in each region must be launched by August 2012.
The operator originally announced 802.16-2004 deployments in Kiev and
for public sector applications in early 2006 with an equipment contract
awarded to Aperto Networks for products in the 5 GHz band.
