Motorola wins a major contract with Wateen Telecom-Pakistan to supply 198,000 WiMAX CPE units.
Motorola's win with Wateen Telecom
is actually an expansion of an existing relationship as Motorola had
already been selected to supply Wateen with an 802.16e WiMAX solution.
This
expansion of the contract puts a number on the quanity of initial
customer premise equipment radios that Wateen intends to field. Despite
the fits and starts we sometimes see with WiMAX in the US, the
International market for the technology appears very strong.
Wateen is clearly a major win for Motorola and the technology.
"The
availability of our WiMAX network is a major milestone for Wateen
Telecom and for the telecommunications potential of developing
economies. Our network puts Wateen at the global forefront of the WiMAX
telecoms industry. Motorola's capabilities to effectively deliver WiMAX
802.16e solutions and CPEs ahead of the industry and our early adoption
of this technology has given us the opportunity to be the first to
offer WiMAX 802.16e-based broadband voice and data services in
Pakistan," said Tariq Malik, chief executive officer, Wateen Telecom.
This
deployment with Wateen is amongst the largest WiMAX deployments in the
Middle East and with its network now operational Wateen is poised to
begin ramping out service quickly. The company expects rapid growth
during its first year in WiMAX services.
